A pioneering model for patient-centred care in British Columbia, the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre combines outpatient surgery and diagnostic procedures with specialized clinics and community programs under one roof. As the first facility of its kind in Canada, it applies evidence-based design principles to improve the outpatient experience.

Delivered through a public-private partnership with the General Contractor partnership of Bouygues and Bird Construction, the 188,000-square-foot centre integrates the latest advances in technology and healthcare delivery. Services include diagnostic imaging, chronic disease therapy, same-day surgery, rehabilitation, and perinatal assistance. Modular floorplates separate staff and patient areas, converging at points of care. Clear circulation routes make the facility intuitive for clinicians and stress-free for patients and families.

The design reimagines the arrival experience with a check-in area more akin to a modern airport than a typical hospital, featuring both staffed desks and express kiosks. Flexibility was a core requirement, with each floor able to be reconfigured without interrupting airflow, climate control, or movement of people and equipment.

Natural context was integral to the design vision with inspiration from the adjacent Green Timbers Urban Forest. The lobby incorporates life-scale forest photography and two-storey bay windows that add abundant natural light that shifts throughout the day. Pine beetle wood flooring reinforces the connection to nature while contributing to the facility’s LEED Gold certification.

Today serving over 600,000 patients annually, the centre provides a welcoming, flexible, and sustainable environment that sets a benchmark for patient and family-centred care in Canada.

“The new facility is just amazing. The lab team was one of the first ones in there, even before it officially opened. I can’t tell you what a joy it is to work here. The people at Kasian got it right and I really enjoyed the team.” – Barry Pearce, Project Manager at Fraser Health
